Community Electric Cooperative recently mailed about 4,800 capital credit refund checks totaling $362,000.
The refund by the consumer-owned nonprofit corporation includes co-op capital credits for 1983, 20 percent of 1984, and a portion of 1985 non-operational capital credits.
The cooperative assigns any revenues over cost of operations to its member/owners in the form of capital credits at the end of each year. The credits provide equity for the corporation and are used as working capital to keep it financially sound.
Cash refunds are made to members as the cooperative's financial condition permits. Community has refunded $2.35 million since its inception.
Headquartered in Windsor, Community Electric Cooperative serves more than 8,000 families and businesses throughout Suffolk and Isle of Wight, Southampton, Sussex and Surry counties.
It is governed by a nine-member board of directors elected from the membership at its annual members' meeting. This board establishes rates, terms and conditions of service and other policies under which the cooperative operates.
Co-op management requests that members keep addresses current so they may receive capital credits.
