OVERPAYMENT ISSUE

The city has added a fifth name to the list of employees being sued because they were allegedly overpaid as a result of a clerical error.

Bradford Y. Hartung, a police sergeant, is being asked to repay $8,296 that he was overpaid between his promotion in March 1991 and September 1995, when the error was corrected, according to papers recently filed in Chesapeake Circuit Court.

Hartung could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

As in the case of the other employees, the error apparently occurred when the men received an extra 5 percent raise after being promoted.

The city earlier filed suit against three firefighters and another police officer, seeking to recover from them more than $10,000 apiece. The four have responded and asked the city to reinstate their previous pay rate and pay damages, injuries and interest amounting to $25,000. Each said they questioned the raise when they first received it.

The city has offered all five employees several options to repay their debt, including reducing their salaries, performing additional work, or surrendering equivalent value of certain benefits or some combination of all three. by CNB
