MARTIN E. ZIMMER

Martin E. Zimmer, 73, of William Pitt Lane, died unexpectedly on Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. He had been transferred there after being stricken earlier in the day in Glenfield, N.Y., where he and his wife had been celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary party put on by family and friends.

Mr. Zimmer is survived by his wife, Catherine I. Zimmer; three daughters, Mrs. Ray (Sharon) Abdun-Nur of Camarillo, Calif., Mrs. Ronald (Katherine) Rivet, Mrs. Kenneth (Susan) Park, both of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren; a brother, Edward Zimmer of Brantingham, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Bernard (Ellen) Ingoldsby of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Glenn (Margaret Mary) Chamberlain of Watertown, N.Y.

Mr. Zimmer was born in Croghan, N.Y. on Aug. 28, 1922, the son of Lewis and Elizabeth Kelly Zimmer. He was graduated from Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan. He married Catherine I. King in 1946 in Stanley, N.D.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Zimmer enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in Syracuse on Oct. 5, 1942. His military service included a year spent in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant on March 2, 1946, from MB Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Md.

Following his discharge, Mr. Zimmer went to work for the U.S. government - U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as a surveyor/topographical engineer. He began his career in Ft. Worth, Texas, and moved frequently and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. with his job. He retired following 31 years of service in his profession on Dec. 16, 1977. Since 1963, Mr. Zimmer had resided with his family in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Zimmer was a member and communicant of St. Gregory the Great Church in Virginia Beach for the past 32 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 in Croghan, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Society and AARP.

Mr. Zimmer had a variety of hobbies and interests, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and traveling. He was also an avid golfer.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday from St. Stephen's Church, Croghan, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan. Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.
