A private security guard suffered a gunshot to her leg Monday night at the hands of a man who approached her asking for a cigarette and some change and then tried to get in her car.
Lorraine Brewer, 53, was sitting in her unmarked car in the 400 block of Libertyville Road at the Harbor North Apartments when the man approached about 9:30 p.m., according to Elizabeth Jones, a spokeswoman for the Chesapeake Police.
As the man tried to get into her car, Brewer saw that he was armed and tried to take the gun and drive away. She was shot in the upper leg. Brewer was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital for treatment of the injury, which was not considered life-threatening, Jones said.
Brewer was working as a security guard with STI Securities of Virginia Beach. STI has provided nighttime security at the apartments for about two years, Jones said.
Chesapeake police are looking for a black male in his 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches with a muscular build, wearing dark clothing and a cap. He was armed with an automatic weapon.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Crime Line at 487-1234.
