Newport News yard delivers new sub early

Newport News Shipbuilding delivered the attack submarine Cheyenne to the Navy on Thursday, two weeks ahead of schedule. The sub is the last of the Los Angeles class of attack subs to be built and will be the last sub built at the big Peninsula shipyard until 1999. The Navy plans to order the second in a new class of attack subs from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1999. Named for the capital city of Wyoming, the Cheyenne will be commissioned Sept. 13 at the Norfolk Naval Station. The 360-foot sub with a crew of 140 was the 53rd nuclear-powered sub built by Newport News Shipbuilding. (Staff) CSX Corp. names a new vice president

ValuJet Airlines relinquished its takeoff and landing rights at New York's LaGuardia Airport. The rights, which ValuJet had been leasing from Continental Airlines, allowed for five takeoffs and five landings each day. ValuJet spokesman Gregg Kenyon said the slots were returned in July. ValuJet has been trying to regain FAA permission to fly and hopes to resume service, with a sharply reduced schedule, by the end of the week. In addition to pilots and flight attendants, who will be making runs with FAA inspectors this week, ValuJet has begun recalling customer service personnel and reservations agents, Kenyon said.
