NATO EXERCISE: NATO's Partnership for Peace exercise, Cooperative Osprey '96, is under way through Aug. 30 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The training exercise focuses on amphibious operations, tactics and procedures, and is aimed at increasing cooperation between NATO and its partner nations in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. About 1,100 troops from 16 partner nations - among them Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia and the Slovak Republic - and NATO members Canada, the Netherlands and the United States, are participating in the exercise.

COASTAL SHIPWRECKS: Julie Pouliot, administrator of the Old Coast Guard Station in Virginia Beach, will join her husband, Richard, a former Navy SEAL, in presenting a free lecture based on their 1986 book, ``Shipwrecks Along the Coast'' at 7:30 p.m. today in the Nauticus theater.. AIR FORCE WEB SITE: A redesigned Air Force Home Page is now available on the Internet, located at http:www.af.mil. New graphics, easier-to-use features and other changes have been made, making the link a one-stop site for news of service members, biographical information and photographs of high-tech aircraft.

UNITAS SHIPS BRAZIL BOUND: Four Navy ships in the annual Unitas exercise with South American navies departed Venezuelan waters recently after almost two weeks of training in the Caribbean. The Norfolk-based tank landing ship La Moure County and submarine Nawwhal, plus the destroyer Moosbrugger, from Mayport, Fla., and frigate John L. Hall, from Pascagoula, Miss., now move to Brazil for the next phase of the six-month exercise. The ships left in July.

F-14 PILOT SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The U.Va. Club of Tidewater and Friends of Lt. Cmdr. Karl Belczyk present a benefit concert at 9 p.m. Friday at the 67th Street Club on Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, featuring the Charlottesville-based Skip Castro Band. Belczyk, a 1980 University of Virginia graduate, was killed in a mid-air collision in 1994 off the North Carolina coast. A scholarship in his memory is presented to a third-, or fourth-year student at the university. Tickets to the event are $10. For more information, call 422-2837.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

RETURNING:

The Norfolk-based amphibious transport dock ship Ponce returns to Norfolk at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pier 2 after a 2 1/2 month deployment off the coast of Liberia as part of Operation Assured Response.

DEPARTING:

The Norfolk-based destroyer Stump will depart at 10 a.m. Friday from Pier 25 for a scheduled six-month deployment to the Middle East Force. The Stump is commanded by Cmdr. Thomas Kennedy. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
