WHY ARE FIRST LADIES TARGETS?

Regarding Suzanne Fields' ``Now it's Hillary, the Iron Lady, vs. Elizabeth, the Steel Magnolia.'' (Perspectives, Aug. 20):

I am struck by the vicious attacks the media, various parties and the public visit on our first ladies.

The term ``Steel Magnolia'' was applied to Rosalynn Carter, who was criticized for attending Cabinet meetings.

Nancy Reagan was taken to task for the china she purchased for the White House, her designer clothes and consulting with an astrologer.

Barbara Bush was called ``dowdy'' and overweight. Even her faux pearls were raked over the coals.

Hillary Clinton has been vilified for everything.

These women just happen to be married to presidents. They are not employees of the government. They receive no pay. They all love their country and have tried to do good for their fellow citizens. If Senator Dole should win the election, how long will it take for Elizabeth Dole's positives to become negatives? No wonder Mrs. Colin Powell ``just said no.''
