The recent killings by the Turkish police of two young unarmed demonstrators on the green line in Cyprus points out, once again, the urgent need to make every effort to reach a comprehensive settlement on this divided island.
Removal of the foreign troops is the first step. President Clerides of the Republic of Cyprus put that on the table. The United Nations approved it, along with the United States. The Turks, unfortunately, do not even want to talk about it.
If Turkey is to continue to receive military and economic assistance from the United States, we must insist that the Turks adhere to internationally accepted norms and avoid lethal force in nonlife-threatening situations.
