COAST GUARD: BOY AIRLIFTED TO HOSPITAL

A Coast Guard helicopter evacuated a 9-year-old boy Monday afternoon from the cruise ship Meridian, 350 miles east of Elizabeth City, after the child fell from his bunk and suffered a head injury.

The boy, who was not immediately identified, and his mother were flown to the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Air Station, then taken to Albemarle Hospital. A spokesman said the boy was in stable condition Monday night and was being kept in the hospital overnight for observation.

The HH-60 helicopter and a C-130 aircraft left for the cruise ship about 12:30 p.m. Monday and returned shortly after 5 p.m.
