JEWISH FORUM EVENTS

The Tidewater Jewish Forum is selling tickets for its 1996-97 season, which will feature an eclectic gathering of entertainers and Jewish scholars.

The season opens with Joel Grey, an actor known most widely for his Oscar-winning performance in the 1972 movie ``Cabaret,'' who will perform Oct. 13 at the Virginia Beach Pavilion Theater. Through songs and stories, Grey will reflect on his life, the Yiddish theater and his father, the late Mickey Katz.

Judith Miller, an author and correspondent for the New York Times, will speak on Jan. 19 at Temple Israel. Miller, who served as Cairo Bureau Chief for the newspaper, will speak about the causes and impact of violence in the Middle East.

Debbie Friedman, often referred to as the ``Jewish Joan Baez,'' will perform her music on Feb. 16 at Congregation Beth El. Friedman has written contemporary music for many traditional prayers, as well as many original songs in Hebrew and English.

Dr. Everett Fox, author of the best-selling book ``The Five Books of Moses,'' will discuss the challenges of modern interpretation in translating the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. He will speak at the Jewish Community Center on April 6.

Edward Asner, an actor best known for his portrayal of Lou Grant in the ``Mary Tyler Moore Show,'' will talk about his life and work on May 18 at Temple Israel. Asner is a strong supporter of Jewish education, encouraging the prservation of Jewish heritage.

Series tickets are available for $65 for general admission. Other ticket packages, with a variety of subscriber benefits, are also offered. Single tickets will be on sale Sept. 15, if available. The Tidewater Jewish Forum is a fund-raiser for the Jewish Community Center of Tidewater.
