DARE NATIVE SON RETURNS AS MANTEO DEAN OF COA

An Outer Banks native has returned to Manteo to take over as dean of the Dare County campus of the College of the Albemarle.

Justin Tillett, 46, said Thursday he's delighted with the opportunity because community colleges are ``approaching their finest moment.''

The national trend, he said, is for such institutions to play a key role in helping to educate all students.

After being away for 16 years, Tillett returned to Dare County from Boston, where he was dean of enrollment management at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

He also served as director of admissions at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Fla., and at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

A member of the Class of 1968 at Manteo High School, Tillett graduated from Old Dominion University, and earned his master's degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. He currently is completing a doctorate degree in higher education leadership at the University of Sarasota. As dean, Tillett replaces Joe Turner, who has transferred to the main COA campus in Elizabeth City.

The public is invited to meet Tillett at an open house and reception at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, at the Dare County Campus in Manteo.

An honorary degree will be awarded to Diane Baum St. Clair at this event, and the board of trustees will meet in regular session after the reception. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
