IVOR DRIVER INJURED

An Ivor man was injured when his truck was hit from behind by another truck early Thursday morning, then plunged into the James River, state police said.

Donald K. Smith, 40, managed to get out of his pickup truck and float on a tire until he could be rescued, said Tammy Van Dame, state police spokeswoman.

Smith was pulled into a boat by two employees of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, then taken to a hospital.

The nature of his injuries was not known.

Van Dame said Smith, an electrician, was driving home about 2:30 a.m. from a job in Poquoson when a pickup slammed into the back of his Chevrolet.

A helicopter from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital was on the scene and workers used its spotlight to help with the rescue. Smithfield and Newport News police divers helped attach cables to the truck so it could be pulled out of the water by a tow truck.

Van Dame said that charges are pending against John Cook, 28, of Smithfield. He was not injured.
