COPING WITH TERRORISM

In response to ``U.S. should back democratization abroad'' (Another View, Aug. 13): It has always been in the best interest of anyone, regardless of political ideology, to side with those who can best further their interests.

Do we support the right of terrorists espousing democracy in the hopes they stop bombing us? What about the other 10 splinter groups promoting a variant ideology? Democracy is a pat answer but not the shining balm that will heal all wounds. What happens to U.S. troops when the newly created Royalist Terror Underground bombs our maintenance garrisons?

Nowhere in the democratic ideal does it say, ``Seek ye out unbelievers and whup 'em til they convert.''
