MISSING MAN IDENTIFIED

Police on Monday identified the New York man who was presumed drowned a day earlier as 20-year-old Youlando L. Boatswain.

Boatswain, vacationing with friends and family, was last seen struggling in the rough surf Sunday evening. His companions told police they last saw Boatswain drifting from the shore in heavy currents.

The beach was closed for swimming when Boatswain disappeared. The rough surf spawned by Hurricane Edouard forced city officials to ban swimming for most of the weekend. A search for Boatswain failed to locate him.

The rough water also battered several other people who ventured into the surf despite the warnings. Police said several people had been pulled from the turbulent ocean by Monday evening.
