The letter to the editor ``Wrong place for golf course and housing'' (Aug. 28) by Mary Heinricht, contained several inaccuracies that need to be addressed.
First of all, Heinricht took you to task for not pointing out the location of the proposed golf course and retirement community as being south of Indian River Road on the banks of the North Landing River. That was clearly stated in Karen Weintraub's original article on the front page of The Pilot on Aug. 11.
In addition, for those who may have the mistaken impression that the proposed golf course and retirement community will set a precedent for other development in the ``rural-preservation area,'' plans for other development in this very area have already been approved by the city of Virginia Beach.
Secondly, Heinricht insinuated that the project would be built in wetlands and the North Landing would be polluted. Having attended one of several presentations of the plan, it is clear that the project will not touch the wetlands. In fact, one of the most attractive aspects of the project is the wetlands will remain intact and not be touched.
Further, the stormwater runoff from the project will be channeled into holding ponds (``lakes'') where any sediment goes to the bottom before the water continues on its path through the watershed.
The bottom line is that this project will not add to the pollution of the North Landing River nor will it damage the wetlands. Instead, these assets will be preserved, and in the area of the retirement community, will be there for the enjoyment of our senior citizens.
