TEEN DIES, TWO HURT

A 16-year-old girl died early Saturday from injuries she suffered in a two-car accident Friday evening, police said.

Natalie ``Nat'' Brooke Phipps, 16, of the 4200 block of Ewell Road, a junior at Cox High School, died at 10:45 a.m. at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Police said Phipps was the driver of a 1985 Mercury Lynx that apparently ran a stoplight while heading west on Alcott Road at Little Neck Road.

The car was struck broadside by a pickup owned by the city's animal control bureau.

A passenger in Phipps' car, Emily Louise Leonard, 15, of the 200 block of 72nd St., also was hurt. She was listed in stable condition Saturday at Beach General.

The driver of the pickup, Shay C. Mann, 18, of the 2900 block of Lyme Regis Quay, was treated at Beach General and released. He is a volunteer animal control officer with the city.

Phipps and Mann were wearing seat belts, police said; Leonard was not. Neither alcohol nor speed was considered a factor in the accident.
