AT HOME: BURNETT'S LANDING, SUFFOLK HAVEN FOR FIRST-TIMERS AND RETIREES

The good life is only a short commute away. The neighborhood of Burnett's Landing is a remote community nestled in the tranquil countryside just off Route 10 in Suffolk.

This area is ideal for first-time home buyers and recent retirees who are already flocking to Suffolk's affordability and more laid-back quality of life.

According to Pat Morgan, co-site manager with Rose & Krueth Realty, the community's attractiveness is enhanced by the diversity in homeowners.

Residents include young buyers, professionals, military personnel, civil servants, and empty nesters. ``This is the most varied subdivision I have ever worked in,'' says Morgan.

The neighborhood is actually an addition to the more established Burnett's Mill. Another attribute is the anticipated commercial and residential growth of the area as people continue to seek exile from congested urban areas.

Beverly Dorsey, a two-year resident of the community says, ``I am content with the area's quietness, friendliness and safety.''

She also enjoys the benefit of having a number of police officers living in the community.

``It makes you feel safe,'' says Dorsey. Her husband also does not mind the reasonable commute to his work in Norfolk.

Mike Doyle, a recent Virginia Beach transplant, says he appreciates the quality of schools. ``Schools are a lot better here, the curriculum is more advanced and the teacher to student ratio is considerably less,'' says Doyle.

Carla Sill and her husband, three-year residents, say they value the sense of community. ``Everybody knows everybody and neighbors help one another. After the recent storm, neighbors helped one another clean up,'' says Carla Sill.

Residents, through the neighborhood's community center, also organize teen and pre-teen dances and other fun activities for the youth as well as social events for the adults.

Residents are looking forward to the annual Halloween party in which one dedicated resident transforms his home into a haunted house and opens it to the entire neighborhood.

The Sills' sons enjoy fishing at the nearby 22-acre lake, locally known as Peterson's Pond. The lake is full of bass and as the local legend goes, a few years ago someone caught a 10-pound fish.

One of the Sills sons, Gabe, enjoys catching the turtles as well and is actively seeking mom's approval to keep them as pets.

The residents are members of a Homeowner's Association, which charges dues of $7 per month. Neighborhood amenities include a tennis court, a basketball court and clubhouse.

Construction began six years ago and was recently completed. The community was built in two phases with Burnett's Mill composed of mostly pre-fabricated homes and Burnett's Landing containing more traditional homes.

According to Morgan, six years ago the price range was $68,900 to $82,000; more recently, the range is $86,900 to $97,200. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photos]
