HOMEWORK HELP: The Norfolk schools' Homework Hotline began this week. The hot line is geared toward students in first through eighth grade and high school students taking algebra 1 or geometry, but teachers working the phones will try to assist any student who calls. Students who need help completing homework may call 441-2256 or 441-2257 Monday through Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
OPEN HOUSE: The Parent Resource Center at Meadowbrook School will hold an open house for parents of students with disabilities from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. The school is located on the corner of Little Creek Road and Hampton Boulevard.
Staff of the Parent Assisted Consumer Education for Disabled Students group will discuss children's services, and also information about the Parent to Parent Network will be available. The event is free. Parents who need transportation may call 441-2970.
SPECIAL ED: Parents can take a free seven-hour training course to learn how to participate better in the special education process.
The course includes information about ways to work with teachers and other school personnel, identifying children's strengths and weaknesses and learning due process rights and procedures.
The course, ``Understanding Special Education,'' is sponsored by the school system and will be held 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 9 and 10 at Meadowbrook School.
Child care and transportation are available. Enrollment is limited. Interested parents may call 441-2970 for more information.
NICHOLS JOINS BOARD: School Superintendent Roy D. Nichols Jr. has been named to a four-year term to the Board of Commissioners of the National Maritime Center Authority, which oversees Nauticus. Nichols said Nauticus is ``an outstanding educational facility and a tremendous asset to the community.''
