SMEARING NORFOLK STATE

Lynn Waltz's article ``Brotherhood of the gunrunners'' (Sept. 8) compelled me to write. How dare you allow Norfolk State's reputation to be smeared by a minute faction of men who do not represent, in any form or fashion, the machinery of Norfolk State.

As a Norfolk State graduate, I am repulsed by the exploitative tactics this paper uses when referring to Norfolk State University. Why did this story have to appear on the front page? Why were the GPAs of these men included in the story? Or the number of children these men have?

Why is it that other area colleges are not held under the microscope like The Virginian-Pilot examines Norfolk State?

Norfolk State University is not a haven for criminal activity. The Pilot just thinks it is, and never seems to miss an opportunity to accentuate the negative about Norfolk State.
