CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: ***************************************************************** CORRECTIONS Sen. Charles S. Robb, D.-Va., opposed the Defense of Marriage Act, a law denying federal recognition of same-sex marriages. A letter on Friday's editorial page implied he had supported it. Correction published , Saturday, September 28, 1996, p. A2< ***************************************************************** DOMA AND DOING UNTO OTHERS

I am writing in regards to those who have written in complaining about Sen. Robb's refusal to oppose DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act).

Why do these individuals think that they have cornered the market on family values, morality and the good life? If marriage is such a great institution, then why did St. Paul leave his wife to preach against it?

Marriage as it stands today was a method used by the very early Christian church to keep women subjected to men.

Jesus said ``Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.''

Would some of those who agree with DOMA like to have the shoe on the other foot? Would they like to be the ones who are hunted and persecuted? I think the answer is NO!
