Martha Murray Colleran, 77, of the 4300 block of Westwell Lane died Sept. 25, 1996, in a local hospital.
A native of Henderson, Ky., Mrs. Colleran was a retired commander of the U.S. Navy nursing corps. She retired July 1, 1968, after 20 years of devoted service. She was a member of Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel, Little Creek Altar Guild and Oblate St. Gregory's Church. Her tours of duty included the following: Naval Hospital, Pensacola, Fla., during World War II; USS Benevolence (AH-13) during World War II; instructor, Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill.; Naval Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.; and Women's Officers School, Newport, R.I.
Survivors include her husband, William C. Colleran; a stepson, W. Wayne Colleran of Virginia Beach; two stepgrandchildren, Shirley C. Perry and William S. Colleran, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters-in-law, Marianna Murray of Louisville, Ky., and Cora S. Colleran of Portsmouth; a niece, Delores Nulman of California; and numerous great-nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel by Father Morris. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery with military honors. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Little Creek Altar Guild or to a favorite charity.
