DEEP CREEK DROWNS OSCAR SMITH

Top-ranked Deep Creek forced six turnovers and got three rushing touchdowns from quarterback Arnie Powell to beat Oscar Smith 35-14 on Friday night in the Southeastern District opener for both teams.

Deep Creek (4-0, 1-0 Southeastern) allowed 328 yards, but also intercepted five Oscar Smith passes. Five of the six turnovers set up Hornets touchdown drives.

``They were passing a lot, and when we get the ball on turnovers, we try to take advantage of it,'' Powell said.

Deep Creek scored three touchdowns in a four-minute span in the first quarter to break the game open. Powell hit Teray Frost with a 39-yard touuchdown pass to start the scoring.

James Green set himself up for the next score by intercepting a pass and returning it 29 yards to the Oscar Smith 1. He scored on the next play.

Green recovered a fumble on Oscar Smith's next possession, and Powell scored from 16 yards out three plays later.

Oscar Smith (1-3, 0-1) kept it interesting with the passing of Lavar Griffin, who completed 13 of 30 passes for 214 yards. Griffin also rushed for two touchdowns.

``We didn't play well defensively,'' Deep Creek coach Jerry Carter said. ``I'm sure we gave up more tonight than in any other two games combined.'' by CNB
