BIG BROTHER AND VIRGINIA PRISONS

Bruce Morris, deputy secretary of public safety for the Virginia commonwealth, wrote a rebuttal (``State not violating First Amendment rights,'' letter, Sept. 17) to a story in The Virginian-Pilot paper, ``Behind closed doors,'' Sept. 3). He said no one's First Amendment rights are being violated.

I have a son in prison who just informed me, that as of October, our telephone calls will be monitored or tapped by the state of Virginia.

I haven't been notified of the phone monitoring, though I read of it in the newspaper. And I resent the intrusion of my civil rights. This smacks of Big Brother.

Believe me, a lot of things go on behind prison walls that should be public but won't be as the commonwealth will stifle any adverse accountability. After all, prisons are big business in this state!
