FALL FLOWER FESTIVAL IS OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT PANSIES AND MORE

THE ANNUAL FALL Flower Festival and Pansy Sale, sponsored by the Virginia Beach Garden Club, will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Virginia Beach Pavilion. Thousands of pansies will be for sale and more than 15 local vendors will be on hand. I'll be there from 10 a.m. to noon to sell and sign copies of my gardening book. Admission is $1. Those who ordered pansies in advance are admitted free. Call 425-0419. CHECK DRAINAGE BEFORE YOU PLANT

With the fall planting season upon us, it's important to plant trees and shrubs where they have good drainage. Virginia Tech's Diane Relf suggests that before you plant, fill the planting hole half full of water. If water remains in the hole after 24 to 48 hours, choose another site, plant in a raised bed or install a tile drainage system. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
