PRAISE FOR NORFOLK SCHOOLS

I am the parent of a Norfolk public-school graduate and an 11th-grader in the Norfolk public-school system. I was most distressed when I read the Sept. 16 article ``NSU board blames local schools'' for its low graduation rate. In particular, the article blamed counselors for their lack of concern for their students' academic welfare.

While attending public school, my children have received excellent guidance in their preparation for college. In addition, our Norfolk school superintendent, Roy Nichols, and our excellent School Board have made a strong commitment to raising academic standards and ensuring that children are learning essential reading skills at the elementary level.

One important factor that NSU officials forgot to mention in their finger pointing is the issue of parental involvement. Study after study has indicated that children are more successful in school when their parents get involved.

I extend a challenge to all Norfolk parents: If you want your child to achieve, then take an active interest in what he/she does in school. Get involved. If your student sees that you care, he/she will respond by taking a role in his/her education.
