James Fate, 80, of 10 Median Place, died Sept. 26, 1996, in his home.
Born in Florence, S.C., he was the widower of C. Lee Fate. After 35 years of service, he retired from Southern Block and Pipe Company as a cement finisher. Mr. Fate also was a member of Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church, Portsmouth.
Survivors include five daughters, Lois Spencer of Portsmouth; M. Jean Fate of Chesapeake, Barbara Rhodes of Upper Marlboro, Md., Linda Rhodes of Allentown, Md., Carolyn Eure of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons, James T. Fate of Portsmouth, Frank E. Fate of Newport News; four sisters, Essie Ruffin, Lula Horne, Bertha Barnes, all of Newport News, Alice Peyton of Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother, L. Howard Fate of Newport News; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Pastor Allen R. McFarland. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Monday.
