JAMES H. FLIPPEN III

James Howard Flippen III, 39, died Sept. 30, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mr. Flippen was a graduate of Norfolk Academy, Washington and Lee University, and the Oklahoma City University School of Law. He was a member of both the Oklahoma and Virginia bars and practiced law as a partner and chief litigator in the firm of Cooper, Spong, and Davis. He was a past chairman of the Young Lawyers Section of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association's Fee Arbitration Committee and the Virginia State Bar Association's Construction Law Board of Governors. He co-authored a work entitled ``Enforcement of Liens and Judgments in Virginia.''

Mr. Flippen was a past-president of the Tidewater Chapter of the Washington and Lee Alumni Association, past-president of the Portsmouth Sports Club, a member of the board of directors of the Norfolk Academy Alumni Association, the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Norfolk German Club, the Norfolk Assembly, and Leadership Hampton Roads 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Voltz Flippen; two children, Kathryn Elizabeth Flippen and James Howard Flippen IV; a brother, Dr. John Brooks Flippen; a sister, Mary Flippen Peccie; and his parents, Judge and Mrs. James H. Flippen Jr.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 1 p.m. Thursday. Memorial donations may be made to Norfolk Academy. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
