Guilford Brooks McMath, 85, of the 900 block of Shillelagh Road died Oct. 1, 1996, in a Chesapeake hospital.
Mr. McMath was born in Chatham County, N.C., and was the son of the late Murphy Brooks and Patty Clark McMath. He retired from the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base as a sheet metal worker after 30 years service and from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 17 years service. Mr. McMath was a member of Deep Creek United Methodist Church where he had served as a steward and as president of Wesleymen's Bible Class. He was a member of Portsmouth Lodge 898, Loyal Order of Moose, Grassfield Senior Citizens Club, Cavalier Sportsman's Club, and a former vice president of the Grassfield Ruritan Club.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Clay McMath; two sons, Donald Ray McMath, and his wife, Ruth, of Chesapeake, Richard Harold McMath, and his wife, Christine, of Aylett, Va.; three grandchildren, Dawn M. McMath of Gloucester, Daryl H. McMath of Richmond, Patrick McMath and his wife, Dorothy, of Chesapeake; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Deep Creek United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brad Phillips and the Rev. Clark Blevin. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge.
