Four Norfolk organizations have received grants to give books to children in Reading is Fundamental programs.
Children's Harbor, a United Way day-care center, received a $350 grant from the national Reading is Fundamental organization. Norfolk State University's Early Childhood Development Center received a $250 grant, the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority received $100, and the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project Inc. received a $650 grant for use in its Head Start programs.
The grants were made possible through funding from the Heart Sing Foundation, an organization that distributes money for charitable and educational purposes. The Heart Sing Foundation, formerly known as the LBJ Family Foundation, is operated by Lynda Johnson Robb.
Twenty-eight Virginia reading programs received the RIF grants, which are distributed once a year.
Reading is Fundamental is a nonprofit organization that has promoted children's literacy for 30 years. The organization reaches four million children each year with a corps of 200,000 volunteers.
The grants are used for programs that inspire children to read and for books that children can choose as their own to take home and read with their families.
