$16,000 GRANTED TO 6 ARTS-RELATED ORGANIZATIONS

The Suffolk Fine Arts Commission has awarded $16,000 in grants to six local arts-related organizations.

``The purpose is to increase community access to high quality arts,'' said Mark Woodward, senior administrative analyst for the Department of Management Services.

The grant is partially supported by funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The money will be used for programs during the 1996-`97 season. The largest amount, $5,000, was given to Suffolk Museum for its concert series, traveling exhibitions, and Works in Progress which offers demonstrations by visiting artists. Some of the money is also used for the museum's Peanut Fest exhibitions.

Next in line was the Suffolk Art League, which received $4,300. Some of the money will be used for the annual student art display, Exhibit of Excellence - some to pay for the Annual Juried Exhibition juror.

The grant also helps pay for Summer Art Day, a concert and dinner, and a dinner speaker.

Young Audiences of Virginia received $2,100. Virginia Opera was given $2,000. The money is used to bring these state groups into Suffolk.

Riddick's Folly will use its $1,600 to bring in traveling exhibits, help pay for an historic crafts demonstration, and a Race, Class, Gender Living History Program.

Part of the grant will be used for a laundry program, a re-creation of the home's original basement laundry room. It will give visiting students the opportunity to do the laundry as it was done in the last century.

The Sheri Bailey Generic Theater received $1,000 to introduce ``Summers in Suffolk,'' an outdoor historical presentation in June. by CNB
