TWO SHUTOUTS - ONE WIN AND ONE LOSS LAKELAND BLANKED GREAT BRIDGE 18-0; NANSEMOND RIVER TOOK A 63-0 BEATING FROM INDIAN RIVER.

SHUTOUTS were the trend at the two public school football games Friday night.

Eighth-ranked Lakeland blanked its second straight opponent with an 18-0 home victory over new Southeastern District foe Great Bridge. The Cavaliers, with the area's top-ranked defense and rusher, will have their first big test when they host Western Branch Friday night.

``We've got to work harder this week than we've worked in the past,'' Lakeland coach Edward Smither said.

On the down side, Nansemond River took another beating with a 63-0 loss to second-ranked Indian River. The Warriors failed to get a first down and finished the game with negative total yardage.

Saturday night, Nansemond-Suffolk played without tailback Sidney Hazelwood, who sustained a separated shoulder in the Richmond Collegiate game two weeks ago. Hazelwood is expected to be out of the lineup again this week.

Here's a wrap-up of last week's action and a look ahead:

WESTERN BRANCH at LAKELAND

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Western Branch (2-2, 1-2 Southeastern); (Lakeland 4-0, 1-0)

Outlook: With the district title already virtually out of its reach, No. 9 Western Branch can look to disrupt everyone else's championship hopes. Keith Burnell and Marvin Urquhart each ran for more than 100 yards as the Bruins pounded Hickory Friday night, 50-7. Lakeland's main forces - the offensive line, Travis Rawls and the defense - were the deciding factors in the Cavaliers' Southeastern District opening victory over Great Bridge. Lakeland coach Smither's two concerns about last week's game were turnovers and penalties - the Cavaliers had three turnovers and were penalized seven times for 70 yards. ``To go 5-0, we can't do that,'' Smither said.

O. SMITH at NANSEMOND RIVER

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Oscar Smith (1-3, 0-1 Southeastern); (Nansemond River 1-3, 0-1)

Outlook: This is a battle of teams that actually appear to have a chance against one another. Oscar Smith found itself down 21-0 to top-ranked Deep Creek before falling 35-14 Friday night. Nansemond River took more of a pounding, losing to second-ranked Indian River. Almost anything the Warriors do against Oscar Smith will be an improvement. On Friday, the Warriors earned no first downs, accumulated 37 negative rushing yards and had only 18 passing yards for the game.

ISLE of WIGHT at TIDE. ACADEMY

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Isle of Wight (4-1); Tidewater Academy (3-1)

Outlook: The Williams brothers kept the running attack going as Isle of Wight shut out Broadwater 28-0. Van Williams ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns and his brother Griffin rushed for 99 yards and threw a touchdown pass for the Chargers, ranked fourth in the state's private schools Division I poll. Tidewater fell to Kenston Forest last week 32-8.

CATHOLIC at N-SA

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Catholic (2-2, 0-0 Tidewater); Nansemond-Suffolk (2-2, 0-0)

Outlook: Marty White had 115 rushing and receiving yards but failed to get in the end zone as Catholic was shut out by Benedictine 42-0 Saturday. This week, Catholic will have to address Nansemond-Suffolk's ground attack. Warren Carroll, the main man with Sidney Hazelwood out, ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns in N-SA's 31-20 loss to St. Christopher's. The Saints are ranked fourth in the private schools Division II poll.

GRAFTON at FRANKLIN

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Grafton (0-4, 0-1 Bay Rivers); Franklin (2-2, 1-0)

Outlook: Grafton remained in the winless column as Jermaine Burke ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns in Bruton's 32-8 victory Saturday night. Franklin, winless all of last season, improved to .500 with a 34-28 victory over York. The Broncos will look to run against Grafton. Will Harris, who also returned a punt, ran for a score, had three rushing touchdowns Friday for the Broncos.

SMITHFIELD at SOUTHAMPTON

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Smithfield (1-3, 0-1 Bay Rivers); Southampton (4-0, 1-0)

Outlook: Poquoson used its ground game to down Smithfield in the district opener with a 16-8 Islanders' victory. The Packers allowed 216 yards Friday night and could see much of the same this week against Southampton. The Indians responded to their district-opening challenge with a 21-0 victory against Tabb. Southampton only ran for 153 yards as a team but held Tabb to 139 total yards.

ENFIELD at S'HAMPTON ACAD.

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Records: Enfield (1-4, 1-4 Colonial Carolina Conference); Southampton (4-1, 4-1)

Outlook: Enfield, coming off a 46-0 defeat to Parrott Academy, will throw more than Academy is used to seeing. The Patriots passed the ball 33 times last week. Southampton Academy should be fired up after experiencing its 26-6 loss to NEW. The Raiders, expecting to run wild against NEW, allowed 225 rushing yards and only gained 135 yards on the ground. Academy committed four turnovers.

Saturday

WINDSOR at WASHINGTON & LEE

When: Saturday 4:30 p.m.

Records: Windsor (0-5, 0-0 Tri-Rivers); Washington & Lee (3-1)

Outlook: Windsor had three consecutive turnovers - an interception and two fumbles on kick returns - in the third quarter that led to touchdowns in Lancaster's 34-12 victory. Washington & Lee defeated King & Queen 19-6 Friday night. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MICHAEL KESTNER
