THE ``OLD TIMEY'' rock 'n' roll of the 1950s and '60s is almost as popular now as it was back then.
Radio stations are devoted to songs of that era, some of the old records sell better than many of the newer crop, and the artists of 40-some years ago are still making stage appearances.
Friday night promises to be a ``Magic Moment'' as the Drifters - along with the Coasters and the Marvelettes - star at the Franklin Fall Festival.
Drifters hits include ``There Goes My Baby,'' ``Save the Last Dance for Me,'' ``Under the Boardwalk'' and - of course - ``This Magic Moment.''
The Coasters have such happy offerings as ``Yakety Yak'' and ``Charlie Brown.''
The Marvelettes? ``Don't Mess With Bill'' and ``Please, Mr. Postman.''
This will please you: The concert is free.
The groups - combining singing, choreography and humor - will provide four solid hours of solid rock, except for fireworks by Zambelli at 9:30.
Motels are less than a mile away, so anyone heading to Franklin for the event could stay over and take in more activities Saturday, when downtown streets are blocked off for everything from arts and crafts to an antique car show and entertainment including clogging, magicians, jugglers, circus acts, storytellers, a horseshoe tournament and a 5-K run.
The festival is designed to attract people to Franklin and acquaint them with what the city has to offer.
A ``Lucky Ducky'' river race, featuring plastic ducks, and a street dance will take place at 4 p.m.
If you don't mind getting up a little earlier, you can participate in a 7 a.m. fishing tournament.
On Sunday, a three-hour gospel sing will be held at Barrett's Landing, beginning at 3 p.m.
There'll be plenty of food and beverages for sale Saturday and Sunday. ILLUSTRATION: EAST COAST ENTERTAINMENT photos
The Coasters are likely to perform hits such as ``Yakety Yak'' and
