John Lee Smith Sr., 82, of the 2900 block of Magnolia St., died Sept. 30, 1996.
A retired machinist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 27 years service and owner and operator of Smith's Fuel, Mr. Smith was a native of Grifton, N.C. He was also a member and trustee of New First Baptist Church, Taylorsville, Portsmouth. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran and member, Mount Gilead Lodge (NU)102, Order of Masons and Civilian Conservation Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa E. Smith; a daughter, Carol Denise Carter of Bloomington, Ind.; a son, John L. Smith Jr. of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at noon Friday in New First Baptist Church by the Rev. T.M. Steele. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, with military honors. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at 10 a.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Friday.
