Da Vinci, The Virginian-Pilot Readers' Home, Charlie Anderson Builder Inc. Won best craftsmanship award, best deck, best sales and marketing and best curb appoeal in The Virginian-Pilot's readers' choice awards. This house was built in response to more than 1,800 readers' ideas for a dream house. The result is a transitional-style brick ranch with a room over the garage sporting its own bathroom, eight rooms and 2,600 square feet. The exterior includes arched windows with bricked detailing. The backyard is equipped with a pond, large multilevel deck with spa and a swing in the gazebo as well as a roll-up awning. Highlights inside include light, airy rooms, special ceiling effects and hand painting. The kitchen features an island, ceramic tile and distinctive cherry cabinetry. A marble foyer and ceramic tile in the bathrooms add elegance. For added convenience, a central vacuum system has been installed. The master bathroom is equipped with a whirlpool tub and the house has a gas environmental system. This house is already sold.
Silver Belle, The TBA/Cox Communications Charity House, The Ashcroft Co. Best family room, bath, kitchen and deck or patio in Virginian-Pilot's Readers' Choice contest. A traditional brick two-story lakefront house with eight rooms. This Southern Living design is the largest display house, with 3,327 square feet. Exterior highlights include a covered front porch with multiple arches and a tongue-and-groove ceiling, driveway and sidewalk made from paver stone, and a deck with a pool. The interior includes a downstairs master bedroom, lower and upper great rooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, cathedral ceilings, an open great room and kitchen that overlook the lake, a master room with whirlpool tub, central vacuum, intercom and sprinkler and security systems. Its climate control system is electric. This house has already been sold, with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Hampton Roads.

The nine-room, 2 1/2-bath ranch displays accessories and furniture almost exclusively from Lynnhaven Mall. Exterior highlights include arched windows, a roomy, open front porch with columns, interlocking pavers, and an enclosed veranda with a ceiling fan and arched openings to the lake. The interior has a light, open feeling, with rope lighting and a marble and granite hall and foyer, accented with marbleized columns and arches. The master bath is equipped with a Jacuzzi tub, and the environmental system is gas.
Boca Raton, Joe Robinson Custom Construction Co. This brick waterfront Floridian style ranch house with a room over the garage has nine rooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms and 2,900 square feet. The exterior includes arched windows, side garage and decorative brickwork. The deck is multi-level. Inside is an open floor plan featuring cathedral ceilings, ceramic tile work, European maple cabinets and a master bedroom tray ceiling. The environmental control system is gas. The house has an intercom, security and surround sound systems. The master bedroom has a door onto the deck. The master bathroom is equipped with a whirlpool and glass bricks; the room over the garage also has a bathroom.
The Yorktown, L.R. Hill Custom Builders Inc. Won best foyer and best master suite award from Virginian-Pilot readers. This two-story brick waterfront transitional house has nine rooms, three bathrooms and 3,200 square feet. Its outspoken entrance starts with a recessed porch leading to eight-fool entry doors and a two-story bay window above them. The exterior has arched windows with brick detailing, and a deck. Inside, the two-story foyer is bright and alluring, with a curved staircase and arches leading into the dining and family rooms. The vaulted family room ceiling, combined with a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, adds a spacious, airy feeling, as well as a great view. The upstairs master suite has a vaulted ceiling and bay window. The kitchen has a bay window wall, which keeps the lake view intact. This house has a combination fireplace-television niche. The master bath is equipped with a Jucuzzi and large, bright light fixture. The open-floor plan, along with a multitude of windows, large chandeliers and light fixtures, and high ceilings add an airy elegance and make the lake view the house's real focal point. The climate control system is gas.
Menden Hall, The Concrete House, Dominion Building Group Inc. Won best patio award. This unusual transitional style waterfront ranch uses Polystyrene forms filled with concrete. The material features durability and insulation advantages. A concrete house offers superior strength and is energy efficient and fire resistant. The house has nine rooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms and 2,850 square feet. Exterior highlights include a Dryvit finish, side garage, portico and stamped concrete driveway. The rear of the house features a stamped concrete veranda and patio with hot tub and wooden walkway leading to an arbor and pier. Owners will be tending flower beds instead of cutting grass. Interior highlights include a foyer with striking hand painted concrete and high ceilings, hardwood floors, formal combined dining and living rooms with a ventless gas Isokern fireplace, which looks like antique concrete, and triple french doors leading to the veranda. Other highlights are antique furniturem, a master bedroom with french doors leading to the veranda, and a master bathroom with roomy claw foot tub and large antique wooden vanity with double sinks. The vanity was cut from a sideboard from the 1920s. One ceiling corner is a faux balcony with large, antiqued urns. The kitchen has painted spanish tile above the sink, granite cabinet tops and maple cabinets. The house has an electric climate control system.
Hakuna Matata, Area Builders Inc.: This ``no worries'' house is a transitional, contemporary style of brick and siding. It has nine rooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms and 2,965 square feet. The front exterior has an English country flair, curved archway over the front porch, double entry doors with transom, turned columns, copper roof with diamond shaped window over it and custom grilles and windows. A large interlock paver patio with raised, triangular shaped covered porch is off the back. Interior highlights include the two-story open foyer and curved stairway with acrylic balusters, octagonal family and master bedrooms with high ceilings and plenty of windows overlooking the lake, informal back staircase, a home office with built-in desk, a built-in entertainment center, and a hand-painted fireplace in the sunken family room.
