Old Dominion University professor Regula Meier has been awarded the Cross of Merit (1st Class) of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of her efforts to foster German-American relations.
The award was presented Thursday on behalf of Germany's head of state, Federal President Roman Herzog, during a reception at -NATO's Supreme Allied Command in Norfolk during the annual celebration of Germany's Day of Unity.
German Navy Rear Adm. Detlef Kammholz, a member of the SACLANT staff, made the presentation on behalf of Germany's president.
Meier, head of the modern languages section at ODU, has supported the SACLANT German community since the early 1970s. She has been teaching German at ODU since 1960.
She was honored for her liaisons with officials and the many German families moving here, particularly families with children concerned with furthering their education.
As a founding member of the Sister Association, Meier helped develope the city partnership between Norfolk and Wilhelmshaven, Germany, as well as an exchange program between German and ODU teachers and students. ILLUSTRATION: Photo courtesy of Raimund Stoeppler
