The Atlantic Fleet Band, the Navy's Country Current from Washington, D.C., and the Navy Steel Band from New Orleans will give a special Fleet Week concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Willett Hall.
The concert, sponsored by The Virginian-Pilot, is free to the public, but tickets are necessary. Persons without tickets will be admitted 10 minutes before the concert if seats are still available.
Tickets are available at the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce office on the Middle Street Mall and at all other offices of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. The Portsmouth office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call Jan Burton at 664-2561.
Fleet Week activities in Portsmouth start today with the opening of a military art competition featuring work by active-duty personnel. A reception is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m.
Fleetfest will be held at Portside on Thursday, when the Country Current and the Navy Steel Band will play from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
The USS Cyclone, anchored at Portside, will be open for tours from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, and other ships will dock at Portside for the weekend. They will be open to the public 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
A parade of ships on the Elizabeth River and a flyover of 16 aircraft will begin in front of the Seawall at noon Friday. The event will start with a blessing by Chaplain Dennis Boyle of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
On Saturday, Trophy Park at the Naval Shipyard will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and several ships berthed at the yard will be open to the public.
Also on Saturday, the Atlantic Fleet Jazz Ensemble will give a free concert open to the public at Hospital Point inside the Naval Hospital grounds. Free parking for the public will be available in the base garage. by CNB
