THUMPERS OPEN: Thumpers Downtown Grill and Bar open last week on the first floor of the historic Pythian Castle on the corner of Court and County streets.
It's owned by Robert Conery, a Portsmouth man who opened a successful Thumpers in downtown Elizabeth City, N.C.
The new establishment is open every day at 11 a.m., serving entrees until 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends.

RETURN TO PRACTICE: Catherine Sears has returned to her chiropractic practice in Portsmouth.
Sears, who took a break when she married earlier this year, said she missed her work.
She has reopened Tidewater Chiropractic three days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 4 to 7 p.m.
``We're keeping it simple,'' Sears said. ``Just Donna Berry, my office assistant, and I are working in the practice right now.''

BACK TO SCHOOL: C.H. Smith, who has been in the appliance business in Portsmouth for 25 years, went back to school last month.
He attended a five-day Institute of Business Management at Xerox Document University in Leesburg, Va. The program is sponsored by the North American Retail Dealers Association, and Smith received a tuition scholarship from Whirlpool Corp.
Among the subjects of the classes were service, merchandising, marketing, finance and personnel.
NARDA is a not-for-profit trade association with 3,000 members who are retailers of kitchen and laundry appliances, home electronics, computers and furniture.
NATIONAL AWARD: Dean Thomasson, president and owner of Aire Serv of Hampton Roads, received the Personal Achievement Award at the Dwyer Group national convention in Las Vegas recently. Aire Serv is a franchised heating and air conditioning company. Thomasson's business at 3403 Clifford St. is one of two franchises in Hampton Roads.
Thomasson was chosen by franchise system managers to receive the national recognition because of his contributions to the company's progress. The Dwyer Group has 70 Aire Serv agencies nationally and about 1,000 in other trade and service fields. by CNB
