John E. Johnson, 74, a resident of Boykins, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 1996, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A native of Greenville County, he was son of the late Joseph Benjamin Johnson Sr. and Sallie Morris Johnson. He retired in 1984 as a truck driver for Chemical Leaman Co. Inc. He was a deacon of Boykins Baptist Church and his other memberships include: charter member of Boykins Volunteer Fire Department, Boykins Lions Club, Teamsters Retired Chapter (NU)822, Norfolk and Boykins American Legion Post (NU)276. He was serving as treasurer for the Town of Boykins at the time of his death and was an Army veteran of World War II. He had been a valued part-time employee of Purviance Funeral Home for the past three years.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Vinson Johnson; three sons, John Ellis Johnson Jr. of Springfield, Edward Lee Johnson of Newsoms and Glenn Vinson Johnson of Sumter, S.C.; a brother, Joseph Benjamin Johnson Jr. of Sedley; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held in Boykins Baptist Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Benjamin Thomas. Burial, with fire department honors, will be in Beechwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence on Owen St., Boykins. Memorial donations may be made to Boykins Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad or to Boykins Baptist Church.
