While cold, bustery weather kept many saltwater anglers at dockside during the past week, their freshwater counterparts made a few impressive catches.
None was more impressive than the 42 1/2-pound blue catfish pulled from the James River by Van Turpin of Chesapeake. The river also yielded a 22-pound blue catfish for Bill Bullock of Norfolk.
Several big largemouth bass were boated, including an 8-pound, 13-ounce lunker pulled from a private pond by Tim Hensle of Virginia Beach. Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk produced bass weighing 7-13 and 6-10 for Michael Saunders of Suffolk.
Jeffrey Linse of Newport News scored the season's first red drum release on the Outer Banks, at Cape Point at Buxton-on-Hatteras.
