Like Guy Friddell, I mourn the passing of ``shone''; it does sound much better than ``shined.'' Another past tense going by the wayside is ``dove.'' When reading the sports page, I realized that ``the player dove for the ball'' or ``the swimmer dove into the water'' sounds much better than using ``dived.''
In this case, as in many others, change is not progress.
