GUSTY WINDS, ROUGH SEAS DAMPEN MOST WEEKEND PIER-FISHING ACTION

Gusty northeast winds and rough seas kept pier action at most locations to a minimum throughout the weekend.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught a handful of spot and croaker during the weekend.

Several croaker, spot and a few bluefish were taken Saturday on Avalon Pier, but little action was reported Sunday.

Scattered puppy drum, spot, speckled trout, croaker and gray trout were taken from Nags Head Pier Saturday. A few small blues were landed Sunday morning, and some bottom fish and puppy drum were taken later in the day.

Fishermen on Jennette's Pier caught bluefish steadily on cut bait Saturday. A few puppy drum, croaker and spot, and lots of small bluefish were taken Sunday afternoon.

Quite a few striped bass smaller than 28 inches were hooked and released Saturday on Outer Banks Pier. A few trout, puppy drum, bluefish and a few nice speckled trout were taken. A 28-inch striper was landed Sunday, along with a few bottom fish and small blues.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few bluefish and puppy drum on cut bait, and released some 17- and 18-inch stripers Saturday and Sunday.

The weather caused Avon Pier to report few fishermen and even fewer fish.

Fishing was good Saturday on Frisco Pier, which is protected from northeast winds by Hatteras Island. Anglers caught lots of spot, mullet, bluefish and puppy drum. Fishing was slow Sunday morning, but improved during the afternoon, with plenty of spot landed.

Surf fishing was slow along the northern beaches because of heavy seas.

Good catches of small bottom fish, bluefish and trout were taken from the south side of Oregon Inlet late Saturday. Small bottom fish were taken from the bank and from the bridge catwalk Sunday. Some good catches of speckled trout were reported from the Green Island Slough area.

A few puppy drum and small blues were taken during the weekend in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton, but fishing was difficult.

Some puppy drum and keeper flounder were landed Saturday and Sunday along the beach south of Cape Point.

Plenty of 1- to 2-pound bluefish were landed on metal Saturday at Hatteras Inlet. Small bottom fish, bluefish and a few puppy drum were beached from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Weather conditions kept most inshore boats and all offshore boats at the dock along the Dare coast throughout the weekend. A few anglers fished around the Manns Harbor bridge in Croatan Sound. They hooked and released plenty of striped bass weighing between five and eight pounds.

The water temperature was 66 degrees Monday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 68 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
