DEATH AT JAIL

The first ``serious incident'' in the Western Tidewater Regional Jail's three-year history occurred over the weekend when a 33-year-old inmate died after he was found hanging by his bedsheet from his cell door.

Brian S. Wade of the 2600 block of Highland Drive, Virginia Beach, died an hour later at Obici Hospital, said Jail Superintendent John R. ``Jack'' Dewan. Jail officials had performed CPR and called 911, he said.

Wade had been held in an individual cell in the medical block since being brought to the regional facility Thursday night, Dewan said. He was under closer watch than normal because of expected drug withdrawal, Dewan said.

Jail employees had checked on him about four minutes before he was found by employees bringing dinner trays into the unit, Dewan said.

Wade had been sentenced in Isle of Wight County for breaking and entering and larceny, Dewan said.

An autopsy had been done Monday, but final results had not been received. by CNB
