Forty-five individuals and organizations who have made a special effort to keep our city clean and beautiful were recently honored by the Clean Community Commission during its 10th annual Environmental Service Awards program.
More than half of the awards (24) went to recognize participants in the adoption programs in which individuals, couples or organizations agree to maintain the appearance of a spot, street, highway or beach for a two-year period.
All the sites must be cleaned at least six times per year. Parks, trails, and school grounds also have been added to the areas that can be adopted. Certificates of Distinction went to 14 individuals and organizations who conducted eight or more cleanups or donated more than 200 hours during the fiscal year. Ten Certificates of Commendation were awarded to those who conducted at least five cleanups or donated more than 100 hours during the year.
Barker, Campbell and Farley advertising agency, Galilee Episcopal Church (host of this year's awards program) and the Technical and Career Education Center's Advertising Design Class were recognized as outstanding Clean Community Commission sponsors. This year, more than 50 individuals, businesses and groups contributed in-kind contributions to support the commission's programs.
Seventeen Awards of Merit and Awards of Excellence were presented to those who made outstanding contributions to environmental improvement efforts such as Earth Day '96 and Clean the Bay Day.
A special Hall of Fame award went to Commission Chairman Maurice B. Jackson. In the words of Mayor Meyera Oberndorf, who presented the award, Jackson ``has maintained a level of commitment to the city and the Clean Community Commission that borders on the phenomenal.'' by CNB
