NELSON N. SLAVIN

Nelson Nathan ``Nat'' Slavin, 84, of the 100 block of Beverly Ave., a retired aircraft mechanic, died Oct. 9, 1996, in a local hospital.

Mr. Slavin had retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility after 30 years of service. Mr. Slavin was a native of Port Huron, Mich. He was a member of Temple Israel and its Men's Club in Norfolk, and attended Ytzak El Channah Yeshiva in New York. He taught at the Hebrew School in Newport News, Portsmouth and at the Hebrew Academy in Virginia Beach. He became a Mason in 1951 and attained the status of 32nd degree and received the Mary Krukin Award in 1980. He was a member of the Corinthian Lodge 266 AF & AM, Norfolk Lodge (NU)1 AF & AM, Elizabeth Lodge (NU)34 AF & AM, John Walters RAC (NU)68, Scottish Rite Norfolk, Khedive Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.), Khedive Drum & Bugle Corps, Westminster (NU)99 O.E.S., Va. Research Royal Arch Chapter 1753, Brith Shalom Center, Golden Agers Club, Jesse Albert White Council 110 AMD, Sunshine Committee, The J.C.C., The YES Club, and a volunteer for Jewish Family Services, Beth Sholom Home, The Masonic Blood Donor Committee.

Mr. Slavin was most recently noted for being a torchbearer for the U.S. Olympics on June 22, 1996, in Richmond, Va.

Survivors include his wife, Annie K. Slavin; a daughter, Cynthia J. Greenberg of Richmond; a son, Dr. Sidney H. Slavin of Richmond; a brother, Samuel Slavin of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren, Brenda Bryn, Melanie S. Buffenstein, Mitchell Slavin, Diana Slavin, Avi David Slavin, and four great-grandchildren, Alyssa Buffenstein, Joshua Buffenstein, Alexa Bryn and Johnathan Bryn.

A chapel service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, by Rabbi Michael E. Panitz and Cantor Yael Fischman. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. The family will be at the home of Annie K. Slavin.
