The Tight Lines fishing team from Kill Devil Hills caught eight fish and scored 23 points Thursday to take the opening-day lead in the 46th annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament.
Team members include: Keith Bryant, Susan Marchitelli, Jan Holloman, Suzanne Elkin, Sonja Jones and Mark Kolhhaffer.
The Sand Bunnies of Nags Head, an all-female team, is second with 10 scoring fish and 22 points. The team features Julie Gard, Noelle Payne, Becky Masters, Bobbie McCarty, Zandra Sehnoyer and Dana Graf.
The Outer Banks Saltmasters of Nags Head are third with nine fish and 22 points. Fishing for the team are Bill Winstead, Charlie Aycock, Bob Hall, Jeff Haskett, Evans Poindexter and David McGlaugrou.
The top women's team not in the lead three is TW's Mullet Mamas, fifth overall with eight fish and 21 points. The team features Teri Andrews, Margaret Veneer, Judy Aycock, Diana Miller, Robin Stewart and Linda Toler.
Jan Holloman of the Tight Lines has the largest catch by a female, an 18-inch black drum, while the largest catch by a male, also an 18-inch black drum, was made by Milton Phelps of the Drum Runmers of Wanchese. Fish are scored by length.
Team competition continues today for the 80 six-person squads, with an individual contest open to anyone on Saturday.
The tournament is hosted by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club and is headquartered at George's Connection.
