In response to ``Norfolk proposal raises hackles'' (MetroNews, Sept. 26): My eighth-grade daughter was able to sum up the proposal of school officials very nicely: It seems as though they don't want students to work, but want teachers to cover for them and do more work.
I would add that it looks as though Norfolk officials want to look successful by lowering standards. Why not start a campaign to convince colleges and employers of the desirability of 50 percent achievement, late work and employee disruptions? Eventually, discrimination charges could be brought against any employer who requires more than the traits of failure, procrastination and anti-social behavior.
My eighth-grader knows her teachers believe she can think, work and achieve. Next time you form a committee to improve your schools, let it be made up of eighth-graders - they still believe in themselves.
