After an almost total absence from the area throughout the summer, speckled trout appeared in surf and pier catches during the weekend.
Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught spot, a few bluefish and scattered speckled trout Saturday. Fishing was slow Sunday, with only a few spot and speckled trout taken.
Small bluefish and scattered, nice-sized speckled trout were landed off and on Saturday on Avalon Pier. Only a few small bluefish were caught Sunday.
Spot, croaker and an occasional speckled trout were landed on Nags Head Pier Saturday. Few fish were taken Sunday.
Jennette's Pier reported good fishing Saturday, with big spot, speckled trout, a few bluefish and black drum landed.
A 5-pound, 11-ounce speckled trout was decked Saturday night by Daniel Coodfelter of Winston-Salem. The big fish hit cut bait.
Bluefish, puppy drum and scattered speckled trout were taken Sunday.
Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught a mixture of fish Saturday, including spot, bluefish, puppy drum, black drum and a few speckled trout. Fishing was slow Sunday.
On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few bluefish, small speckled trout, croaker, black drum and several sea mullet throughout the day Saturday.
Spot, mullet and gray trout were landed Sunday morning, but afternoon action was nil.
A few puppy drum, bluefish, gray trout, scattered spot and a 5-pound black drum were landed Saturday on Avon Pier. Lots of spot, small black drum and a few speckled trout were caught late Sunday.
Bluefish, big albacore and several jacks were decked Saturday morning on Frisco Pier. A few bluefish, flounder and albacore were landed in the afternoon.
Several nice speckled trout and some albacore were taken Sunday morning, and small pompano were landed later in the day.
Surf fishermen caught scattered small bottom fish, tailor bluefish and speckled trout from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Trout were landed Saturday and Sunday from sloughs north of Kitty Hawk and Jennette's Piers.
Small bluefish, gray trout and a few bottom fish were taken during the weekend around Oregon Inlet.
Some speckled trout were beached by anglers in the surf north to Rodanthe Pier. Surfcasters caught bottom fish, puppy drum, small bluefish and speckled trout along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Jacks and false albacore were landed at Cape Point early in the morning Saturday and Sunday. A few puppy drum were taken during the day.
Some nice speckled trout were beached near the lighthouse, including a 4-pound, 5-ounce fish by Phil Clark of Cape Cod, Mass. Most of the speckled trout were taken on Mirrolures.
Quite a few 2- to 3-pound bluefish were landed in the Hatteras Inlet surf Saturday. Small blues, sea mullet, flounder, a few puppy drum and lots of albacore were hauled from the surf Sunday from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was fair throughout the weekend, with tailor blues landed. A few small king mackerel were taken several miles off the beach.
Tuna fishing was good off Oregon Inlet Saturday. Mixed-sized yellowfin were caught during the afternoon between the point and the 40680 Loran line. Two sailfish were released by the First Crack.
Charters caught limits of yellowfin tuna Sunday east of the inlet around the 40750 Loran line. Most of the tuna taken were fairly small.
Good numbers of 40- to 50-pound tuna were taken off Hatteras Saturday. Some citation wahoo also were landed.
King mackerel fishing was excellent off Hatteras between the Diamond Shoals Towers and the rockpile Sunday. The kings weighed between 15 and 30 pounds, and were taken on spoons pulled deep behind planers. A few tuna and wahoo also appeared in catches.
King mackerel action should be good throughout the week off Hatteras.
The water temperature was 63.5 degrees Sunday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 66 degrees Monday at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
