A GOOD TIME TO STOCK UP ON PORK AND CHICKEN BREASTS

THE COST OF PORK has been up recently, but this week, grocery stores are using the ``other white meat'' as a lost-leader item: one they use to get you into the store.

Take advantage of this supermarket strategy by picking up assorted pork chops for $1.59 a pound. Pork spareribs are also on special at $1.48 to $1.59 a pound.

Boneless chicken breast is another good buy at $1.99 a pound.

Nothing reminds me of apple season more than crisp air and rustling leaves. Red and Golden Delicious Virginia apples are offered in 3-pound bags for $1.38. Other good produce buys include Florida grapefruit, 3 for $1; and Idaho baking potatoes, 3 pounds for $1.

Salads aren't just for summer, heads of iceberg lettuce are good buys at 69 cents or California Crisp Lettuce at 57 cents.

While enjoying the taste of seasonal favorites such as cranberries, persimmons and pomegranates, remember you can also use these fruits for decorating your home with fall arrangements or wreaths. ON THE SHELF
