NORTHERN BEACHES YIELD SMALL CATCH

Pier fishing Tuesday along the northern beaches was slow overall.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed a few bluefish and sea mullet. A few blues and a few speckled trout were taken during the morning on Avalon Pier, and some small blues were caught in the late afternoon.

Small bluefish, a few spot, scattered sea mullet and a few speckled trout were landed from Nags Head Pier off and on during the day. Jennette's Pier reported slow fishing, with only a few black drum and small bluefish taken.

Fishing also was slow on Outer Banks Pier, where fishermen caught only a few bluefish and black drum.

Action was a little better on Hatteras Island.

Rodanthe Pier reported some spot, puppy drum, small bluefish and sea mullet taken. Fair numbers of sea mullet, spot and a few speckled trout were decked on Avon Pier.

Afternoon fishing was good on Frisco Pier, with lots of small and medium sea mullet, black drum and small pompano landed.

Surf fishermen beached a few sea mullet, small bluefish and an occasional speckled trout from Corolla to Oregon Inlet.

Small bottom fish, flounder, a few tailor bluefish and several puppy drum were taken around Oregon Inlet.

Plenty of tailor blues were landed on cut bait along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A few gray trout and a few speckled trout were caught north of Rodanthe Pier.

Good numbers of drum were landed at Cape Point on Monday night. Albacore and jacks were taken early Tuesday morning. Speckled trout were landed during the day near the lighthouse and north of Avon Pier.

Small sea mullet, flounder and bluefish were caught by surfcasters from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Plenty of striped bass were hooked and released in the Manns Harbor area.

Yellowfin tuna action was fair off Oregon Inlet. Some of the best action was around the 40850 Loran line.

Fair numbers of 8- to 15-pound king mackerel were landed off Hatteras between the rockpile and the Diamond Shoals light tower. Charters also landed a few tuna and wahoo.

The water temperature was 65.5 degrees Tuesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 72 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
