Police began a homicide investigation Tuesday after a teen-ager was found shot to death in a grassy field near a downtown church.
Diantrace Ward, 17, of the 6200 block of Arthur Ave. had been shot multiple times, said Detective Amber H. Whittaker, a Portsmouth police spokeswoman.
The killing happened in the 800 block of Washington St., near Columbia Street. Whittaker said a report of gunshots and an injured man came to police about 12:40 p.m.
When police arrived, they found Ward's body, but few leads as to what led to the shooting.
Police are looking for two to three suspects, some of whom may have been seen running from the scene, Whittaker said.
